I looked around the crowded club, trying to find Grayson.
“He slipped out,” a voice said from behind me. I turned to see Eva standing there with a glass of champagne in her hand. “You’re looking for your man, right?” She asked with a smile, “I saw him head outside a minute ago.”
I smiled and mouthed, “thanks”, before heading towards the door in search of my date. Sure enough there he was outside the club, looking up at the sky.
“You know this isn’t the best neighborhood, I’m not sure I’d be hanging out here by myself,” I teased slipping my arms around his waist.
Grayson turned his head to look at me. “I heard it’s on the upswing, besides I have a bit of an in with Starstorm and I know she’s got my back.”
“I guess, you’re safe then,” I said, leaning into his side. “What are you doing out here?”
“Just thinking,” he said quietly. “It’s been a big year.”
“It has,” I agreed. He’d lost his father, taken over Prescott Industries, revitalized the Grand and discovered his girlfriend was a superhero. “Hopefully next year is a little quieter.”
“That would be nice,” Grayson agreed, “do you have any wishes for the New Year, Lexi?”
“Don’t you mean resolutions?” I asked, wrinkling my nose, “and no, I try not to make them because I know I’ll break them.”
“When I was little, my mom used to have us all make a wish,” Grayson said quietly, “because she felt the same way as you do, that resolutions are to easily broken, so she had us make wishes about something we’d like the year to bring us instead.”
“That’s so sweet,” I said and then turned so I was facing him, “My only wish for this year is to spend it with you.”
He smiled, his expression warm and tender. “Funny, that’s my only wish as well.”
He leaned down to press his lips to mine and we stood there for a long time, wrapped in each other’s arms until I finally pulled away. “I hate to the ruin the moment, but I’m freezing.”
Grayson laughed, obviously just remembering that it was winter and neither of us was wearing a coat. “I guess we should go back inside,” he agreed, “besides, it’s almost midnight and we don’t want to miss the big moment.”
“Given that this is your club, that might be bad,” I agreed, “besides, I want to make sure my wish comes true.”
“Me too,” Grayson agreed, wrapping his arm around me as we headed inside the door.
I snuggled into his side, feeling perfectly content and ready to see what the new year would bring us.
