The sounds of heavy footprints made Kenna look up from the documents she was studying just in time to see her husband storm into the great hall. She raised an eyebrow, wondering what had him in such a mood and then stood up to greet him.
He pressed a brief kiss to her cheek and she could feel the tension coming up off him in waves. “How was Lykos?” She asked him as they both sat down.
Diavolos groaned. “I wish I was an only child,” he complained and then nodded at Raydan, “I wish he was too.”
“What did Zenobia and Adder do this time?” She asked warily. The two women did an ok job of managing things in Lykos, but they each had their own agenda and sometimes those agenda conflicted and it resulted in a mess that usually took Kenna’s husband from her side.
“Labor at the docks had ground to a standstill,” Diavolos explained, “and with the newest shipment from Ducitora due in a matter of weeks…”
The newly opened trade routes to Ducitora had opened up new lines of revenue for the Five Kingdoms and Abanthus and Fydoria were both doing quite well with the increased trade, but it hadn’t been without problems or headaches since it had required a drastic increase in production and facilities in a relatively short time.
“I’m surprised you were able to leave,” Jackson commented, “or is everything straightened out?”
“Everyone is back to work, for now.” Diavolos said warily, “I will probably have to go back soon, though.”
Kenna felt a rush of sympathy. He looked exhausted. He must have rushed back to be with her and Leon and even with the airships, she knew the constantly traveling wasn’t easy.
“Next time, I’ll go with you,” she said impulsively. She was the Queen of Abanthus, even though she tended to leave the ruling to Diavolos, but maybe that wasn’t fair. He spent so much time traveling back and forth between Abanthus and Stormholt and she knew it was for her sake because Stormholt was her home. “Besides Leon would probably like to see his Auntie Zen.”
She turned to Raydan. “Can you send a message to Dom and say that I want him back as quickly as possible?” Dom and Raydan shared the duties of running Stormholt whenever her obligations took her elsewhere.
“Of course, my queen.”
“Jackson?”
“I’ll clear your schedule,” he promised.
“Good,” Kenna nodded and turned to her husband, “let’s get you up to our chambers.”
He grinned, despite his obvious exhaustion. “All you have to do is ask, my love.”
She rolled her eyes. “To sleep.”
“Only to sleep?” He whispered as he helped her to her feet.
“At least at first,” she replied, savoring the feel of his hands against her. She had missed him so much.
She could see all of their friends watching her with amusement. “Do you two ever stop?” Val asked with a smirk.
Kenna merely laughed and let Diavolos lead her out of the great hall and up the stairs to their chambers. As soon as they were alone, he locked the door and pulled her into his arms.
“How I’ve missed you,” he whispered against her lips.
“I’ve missed you too,” Kenna admitted, clinging to him.
They walked towards the bed, still wrapped in each other’s arms. Once they reached their destination, Diavolos started pulling at the ties of her gown.
“Diavolos, you need rest,” Kenna reminded him.
“I need my wife,” he corrected, “Two weeks, Kenna. Two weeks without you.”
She could see the need written all over his face, the same need that she felt coursing through her. Two weeks was a long time to go without him, without the feel of his lips against her, the touch of his hands on her skin…
Decision made, she helped pull his tunic over his head. The rest of their clothes followed quickly and then soon they stood there bare. Kenna drank in the sight of her husband. Even after two years of marriage, he still made her heart race and her breath catch in her throat.
He caught her looking at him and shot her that smug smile of his, the one that made her want to simultaneously punch him and kiss him. It faltered though as he looked at her and was replaced by a look of awe. “You are so damned beautiful,” he told her, sweeping her into his arms and depositing her on the bed.
He knelt over her and she groaned as he began to kiss her belly, his large hands massaging her breasts as he kissed lower and lower. “I’ve missed looking at you, touching you, tasting you.”
He suddenly grabbed her hips with his hands, using them to hold her in place and then he began to use his tongue in that wonderful way of his, lapping at her folds before going deeper. His tongue darted in and out of her, creating a sensation that had her pulling at his hair and throwing her head back. It didn’t take long for her husband’s talented mouth to pull her over the edge and then she reached for him, eager to return the favor, but he pushed her hand away.
“I need to be inside you,” he explained, positioning himself over her and then entering in a swift motion.
“I missed this,” Kenna sighed, glorying in the feel of him.
“So did I,” Diavolos assured her as he began to move against her, she instinctively matched his rhythm, instinctively giving him what he needed from her as he did the same for her. It had been like that from the very start, like they were made to love each other. It wasn’t long before they were coming in unison, his hands tangled in her hair, hers digging into his shoulders.
“I love you,” he groaned against her mouth.
“I love you too,” she said, unclenching her hands from his shoulders and gently rubbing his back instead. He made no move to pull away, instead, they lay like that for a long moment, taking pleasure in just being one.
Finally, Diavolos pulled off her and rolled onto his back. Kenna rolled onto her side and propped herself with one arm and studied him.
“Now will you admit you’re exhausted and take a nap?” She asked him.
“I needed you more than I needed sleep,” Diavolos said with a shrug, but she could see the wariness hit him. He lets out a yawn and pulls her into his arms, settling her against his chest and then a moment later he was asleep.
Kenna stayed there for a moment, just enjoying the feel of his arms around her and then with a sigh, she gently pulled away. As much as she would like to stay curled up with her sleeping husband, she has a kingdom to run and a child to check on.
Besides, she thought with a smile, she had all night for that.
