“Ellie, where are you?”
“In the center of the maze,” I called out, smoothing down my dress and preparing to greet my husband.
A moment later, Liam appeared, smiling at the sight of me, though there was a questioning look in his eyes as he took in the small table set for two. “What’s this?”
“Dinner,” I told him, “I cleared our schedules and arranged for us to have a night alone and this is the most private place I could think of.” Of course, that wasn’t the only reason I had decided on the maze, but that would come later. “We’ve both been so busy and I thought we could use some alone time.”
“It’s a wonderful idea,” Liam assured me, helping me into my chair. Once I was seated, I uncovered the picnic basket that I had brought and served our dinner. “I see you thought of everything.”
“I try,” I told him.
“What’s the occasion?” He asked after a moment, “I know it’s not our anniversary.”
“It could be the anniversary of our first trip to the maze,” I teased.
“September 1st,” Liam answered immediately, “your first night in Cordonia and two nights after we first met. We had our first date on November 14th, we made love for the first time on November 30th, and I asked you to marry me on March 13th.”
I stared at him, unable to believe my ears. I mean, I knew we had met in August, but… I wasn’t sure I could rattle off all those dates at the top of my head.
“Do I need to go on?” He asked, “or do you trust that I know our wedding date?”
“You’re incredible,” I told him, “you really are the most romantic man on the planet.”
“It’s just that every day with you is memorable,” he said, gently caressing my check. “Since we’re not celebrating an anniversary, then I assume this is a ‘just because’ kind of occasion?”
“Not exactly,” I admitted and then smiled nervously, “I’m pregnant. We’re going to have a baby.”
Liam stared at me for a long moment and then stood up and pulled me out of my chair. He lifted me up by the waist and spun me around.
“Uh, not the best idea,” I told him as my stomach began to object to the motion.
He immediately set me on my feet. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking. Are you feeling ok, should I get you some water?”
“I’m fine now that I’m on solid ground,” I assured him.
He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me close. “Eleanor… I…”
“I know,” I said, reaching up to kiss him. I knew how much he wanted a family, how much we both did, and how much my announcement meant to him. “I love you Liam and I am so excited to start a family with you.”
“I love you more than I can ever say,” he told me, running one hand through my hair, “more than I ever thought possible. I always assumed I’d have to settle for fond affection and then you walked into my life and I realized that true, overwhelming love existed and that there was a chance I might actually get to experience it. Now I have so much more than I ever dreamed possible.”
“And the best is yet to come him,” I told him, “we have a whole lifetime ahead of us, Liam. You, me and our family.”
“Our family. I love the sounds of that,” Liam commented before his lips met mine in a sweet kiss.
