Summary- Livia makes a wish and finds herself thinking not of  her country or her house, but of the deepest desires of the heart.

Livia stood at the edge of the water, candle in hand. It was the longest night of the year and tradition dictated lighting candles and making a wish for the new year. As she held her candle, she contemplated her wish.

“Have you thought of what you are going to wish for?”

Livia turned at the sound of the voice behind her, unsurprised to see Kayden standing there, holding an unlit candle. He always seemed to be close by these days, which was both a blessing and a curse.

“I know what I should wish for,” she acknowledged, “I should wish for our plan to succeed, so that I become queen of Cordonia.”

“Is that what you want?”

Was it? It was what was best for House Everhart and all the other current options were terrible, unless they could prove that Renza and Cyrus killed Kendra and get Hunter reinstated as head of House Fierro.

“Wants rarely come into consideration,” she said instead, reaching for a match.

Kayden stilled her hand with his own.

“But this is a wish,” he reminded her, “and what is a wish if not our most powerful desire?”

Their eyes met and Livia knew that the longing she saw in Kayden’s gaze reflected back at him from her own. She caught her breath, overwhelmed with want and they stood there for a long moment, their hands touching, their eyes locked on one another.

“Livia?”

The sound of her name broke the spell and a moment later Hector appeared and at the same time Kayden disappeared into the shadows.

“There you are,” he told her, “I have been looking for you.” He glanced at her candle. “You still haven’t made your wish, what are you waiting for?”

“Nothing,” Livia told him, trying not to glance at where Kayden had been a moment ago. She picked up the match and lit the candle, setting it at the edge of the lake, with all the others.

Let me find a way to be with Kayden, to love him like he deserves, she wished desperately before stepping back to where Hector waited for. Where reality and duty overruled the desires of the heart.

But that didn’t stop her from wishing. Nothing could.
