Viktoria sat in the passenger seat rubbing her neat little bump, whispering between tears,

“I’m so sorry baby, please, please don’t go. Your daddy loves you so much already. Oh God Cassie, what am I going to tell Istvan…? This will break his heart…”

Cassie reached across and squeezed her hand, stifling tears of her own,

“Sweetie it’ll be ok. Honestly, it doesn’t always mean the worst, just try to stay calm, it’s the best thing you can do. Just try to take some deep breaths… I’ll get you there as fast as I can, we’re only a couple of minutes away now.”

Viktoria nodded, starting to sob hysterically,

“If anything happens, it’s all my fault Cassie. I knew I wouldn’t be a good mom, this just proves it… I’ve was so cold and awful at the start, the baby must have known how I felt inside… I’ve caused this Cassie…”

Viktoria’s tears flowed freely as she gulped in air, the younger woman admonishing her firmly,

“Come on now, that’s enough of that talk Viktoria! You will be a great mom and none of this is your fault!! Whether you’d be good or bad parent has literally nothing to do with how successful a pregnancy is, it just doesn’t work like that…”

Silence fell over the women as Cassie willed the traffic lights to change… When the green finally showed, Cassie started to pull away, looking over at Vik as she did. Her heart ached for her friend, she began gently,

“Sweetie, I know you struggled at the start…”

Viktoria felt a sharp pang of embarrassment, shame and inadequacy; she put her head down as she furiously wiped her tears away, rocking back and forth, hugging her swollen stomach. Cassie continued calmly,

“But we’re going to get to the hospital, they’re going to tell you everything is fine and then in a few months, you are going to be an amazing mommy to this little baby. You’re so down on yourself, your really can’t see it can you?? Sweetie, you wouldn’t be in such a state if you didn’t love that little baby with all your heart… You’re so upset because you want to protect it. You’re already a lovely mommy Vik.”

Viktoria swallowed hard as she raised her head to look at Cassie. What she’d just said, it was as if someone had slapped Viktoria around the face. The words rolled around and around in her head; those words resonated with her more strongly that anything she’d heard in months. Yes, she was scared for Istvan, but this was more than that. Had she spent so long beating herself up and punishing herself for not feeling the way that she should, she failed to notice the strength of her own maternal feelings sneak up on her… Her hand settled back on her stomach again, taking a deep breath as she massaged her bump lightly. Cassie noticed the gesture and smiled to herself as she turned into the hospital car park, she just hoped she was right and the Queen’s bleeding wasn’t anything to worry about. As she pulled into a spot right in front of the door where she knew she shouldn’t be parked at all, the petite nurse pulled on the handbrake and took Viktoria’s face in her hands,

“Stay here, don’t move sweetie. I will be back with someone to help get you inside in two minutes, you’re going to be ok, both of you…”

Viktoria nodded shakily as Cassie pressed a heartfelt kiss to her forehead and jumped out the car, racing through the automatic doors. Viktoria wiped her eyes and breathed deep exaggerated breaths as she tried to compose herself; her thumb grazing gently over her tiny bump as she whispered,

“Please be ok baby. I don’t want to lose you… Daddy and I love you so much…” .

Breathless from her sprint inside, Cassie grabbed the first medic she found and a wheelchair from a passing porter,

“I’ve got the Queen in my car out front, she’s four months pregnant and she’s bleeding. I got her here as fast as I could. The King’s on his way…”

Within seconds Viktoria found herself being wheeled straight to a private room on the prenatal unit, visitors and patients staring at her as she went, recognising her, putting two and two together.. . She kept her eyes down, focusing only on cradling her little bump. The secret was out now, and not on their own terms. But Viktoria didn’t care, the only thing she cared about right now was making sure that the baby was ok.

Cassie was off talking to the doctor, explaining the circumstances that brought them in: it turned out that Cassie had worked a stint in A&E some years previously with Lydia, who would be taking Viktoria through to the ultrasound suite. Viktoria had all of her details taken, been quizzed on when the bleeding started, how heavy it was, where were the pains in her stomach. Did her back hurt as well? Did she have any nausea? Lydia had prodded her stomach and performed the blood pressure test – twice… Viktoria was growing weary as she shouted at the doctor that rather than asking twenty questions, couldn’t they just hurry up and tell her what was going on and if the baby was going to be ok?? As Cassie stroked her shaking hand and Lydia tried to calm Viktoria down, Istvan burst through the doors, eyes wide and breathless,

“Viktoria!”

He rushed to her bedside as she dissolved into floods tears at the mere sight of him. His usual sharp tailoring dishevelled, a sheen of sweat on his dark brow, he’d clearly ran as fast as he could from the car to get her. Viktoria sniffed as she buried her head against his neck, her arms clutching at him as if her life depended on him,

“Istvan I’m so sorry, I-I…”

Istvan’s face fell, full of dread, his voice quivered as he spoke,

“Oh Vik…? The baby….? Please…”

He stared wildly at Cassie and Lydia, blue eyes beseeching them, fearing the worst, but hoping against hope. Cassie spoke quietly and calmly to the King,

“She’s not been through yet. Lydia here was just finishing up getting some details, then she is going to take you both through to see what’s going on.”

Lydia interjected,

“Please don’t think the worst Your Majesties, while bleeding isn’t entirely normal at this stage in a pregnancy, it can happen for many reasons other than a miscarriage. So let’s all stay positive until we know any differently, ok? I’ve also taken the liberty of calling your regular Physician, Your Grace, he was at a conference but is on his way, he will be with us within the hour.”

Istvan pulled Viktoria’s face to his chest and kissed her hair as he nodded worriedly at the warm-mannered doctor. He knew she said let’s stay positive, but he felt like his world had stopped turning in that moment; Viktoria looked so fragile, his child, that he loved and wanted, so badly, was in jeopardy. After all the loss he’d suffered in his lifetime, surely fate wouldn’t be so cruel.
