“It’s always been like this between us, Nadia…” Lucy says, plopping down on the couch next to her cousin as she goes over what happened with Damien earlier that night.
…
“Eros has got stats and science, but they don’t know you, Damien,” Lucy look up at him through her long lashes, emotions rushing through her… Almost making her forget about Hayden. “You’re a good guy…” She takes a deep breath before deciding to add, “And an even better friend. You’ll find the right person.”
Breaking his gaze, she focuses on her drink. Downing the last of it, along with some self-pity – unable to say what she was really thinking.
“Heh. Thanks, Luce. Means a lot.”
Lucy turns back to look at him, surprised to see the same hunger in his eyes that she’s positive he can see in hers. And right as she inches closer, he stands abruptly, putting up his walls again.
“It’s getting late.”
…
“It’s like, no matter what, we’re… stuck. I don’t know what to do…” Lucy mumbles into her hands, sitting next to her cousin, knees pulled into her chest. She feels Nadia’s hand moving in soothing circles on her back as Lucy rests her head on Nadia’s shoulder.
“Well… That depends,” She places her hands on Lucy’s shoulders, turning her to face her, “What do youwant?”
“I… What do you mean?” She asks, scrunching up her nose in confusion.
Nadia sighs, rolling her eyes. “Who is it gonna be? Hayden… or Damien?” She heads toward to the door, stopping to face Lucy while putting on her coat. “You need to decide, Lucy… and soon. Before more people get hurt.”
Nadia’s words echo in Lucy’s head, as she pours a drink, trying to figure out what to do next.
…
Damien wakes up to his phone ringing. He sleepily glances at his watch on his bedside table. 3 am. Who the fuck is calling me in the middle of the night?
He checks his phone, bolting up when he sees ten missed calls and 3 voicemails from Lucy. Before he even unlocked his phone, she called again.
“Lucy…? Luce, is something wrong?” Damien asked concern evident in his voice.
“…rry…damie…i..eed…lp..nk..he’s gon….ill..me…”
“Lucy, the call keeps cutting out. What’s going on? Where are you?”
All he could hear was static and a scream… Then dial tone.
…
All he did for the next 2 hours was pace the room in shock, trying to figure out what was going on. It’s nearly 6 am when he hears the doorbell, followed by rapid knocking.
“Damien!! D!! Open up!! C’mon! Openupopenupopenup-!” Still knocking when he answers, Nadia ends up hitting his bare chest.
“God, Nadia. It’s not even six, and you’re already trying to kick my ass.” Damien says with a smirk as he lets her in.
“Sorry, but this is serious!! Did you get any calls from Lucy last night? I slept straight through them, then my phone died and I left it at home, and when I went by her place this morning she didn’t answer and the spare key was missing from the doormat… I think something’s wrong.” Nadia goes straight to his kitchen, and starts brewing a pot of coffee. A few minutes later, Damien emerges from his room fully dressed, and continues to talk to her from his chair in the living room.
“I was actually just about to call you, I-”
*ping*
“You… what? C’mon, D! Cat got your…?” Nadia walked into the living room with 2 coffee mugs, only to stop seeing Damien staring at his phone. His hands were shaking and face was blank.
“Damien…?” She asked with concern, as she placed the mugs on the coffee table.
Wordlessly Damien tossed her the phone, before grabbing his jacket and leaving his apartment. Nadia stares at the screen.
