Words- 765
“Charlie, what are you doing here?” I asked in surprise as I opened the door to see my older sister.
“I’m here to give you your Christmas present,” she said with a grin.
“Christmas isn’t for a few more weeks,” I reminded her, though I was intrigued by what she had arranged. Charlotte had always been one for big gestures.
She laughed, “I know, but this was time sensitive, so you get it early.” She turned to Kaitlyn, who was standing behind me. “Is she ready to go?”
“Yep,” Kaitlin told her and for the first time, I realized she was holding a bag that she quickly passed to Charlotte. “Have you fun.”
“Where are we going?” I asked as Charlotte ushered me out the door.
“You’ll see,” my sister said mysteriously as we got in her car.
“Ok, don’t you think I should know our location before I get on a plane?” I asked once we reached the airport.
Charlotte rolled her eyes, “Spoilsport. Fine. Where do you most want to be?”
“With Chris,” I answered instantly and then stared at Charlotte. “Seriously?”
“Yep, we’re off to the championship game,” she announced, “we get to have some much-needed sister time plus I get to meet that man of yours.”
“This is amazing!” I said, throwing my arms around her. “You are the best!”
“I am,” she agreed with a grin, “but you’re pretty awesome too. Look at everything you’ve done this last year, from finding a way to pay for college after dad lost his job to writing a book and now this journalism award. I’m so proud of you.” She gave me a quick hug and then grinned, “let’s get on that plane.”
During the trip, I was focused on I imagining Chris’s reaction. “Does he know I’m coming?” I asked Charlotte curiously.
“No, but your friend Zig does,” she answered, “he helped me make the arrangements.”
I nodded, not even wondering how Charlotte had managed to get Zig’s number, or Kaitlyn’s for that matter. My sister had a way of being able to do anything if she put her mind to it. I was looking forward to seeing Zig again, and I planned on thanking him for helping Charlotte, but mostly I wanted to see Chris. I had missed him so much.
Once we arrived, Charlotte and I checked into our hotel, where I learned that she had booked two rooms. “We’re not sharing?” I asked in surprise. “I thought this was sister bonding time?”
She grinned, “it is. But you’re also here to be a supportive girlfriend and hopefully celebrate his big win and separate rooms were a must.”
“This is why you’ve always been a bad influence,” I teased her.
Charlotte just grinned, “always. Now let’s go, Zig just texted.”
I nodded, checking my appearance in the mirror one last time and then we headed down to the lobby of the hotel. I spotted Zig and Chris instantly.
“Chris!”
He turned at the sound of my voice, his eyes widening when he saw me. We ran towards each other and he swept me up into his arms, his mouth descending on mine. I clung to him, he felt so good. It had only been a few weeks, but I’d gotten used to having him there every night and a few weeks was still much too long. We kissed for a few minutes longer, unconcerned that we were in the middle of a hotel lobby until finally, we broke apart.
“What are you doing here?” He asked, his arm still wrapped tightly around me.
“My sister surprised me with tickets,” I said, motioning to Charlotte.
She stepped forward, a big smile on her face. “You are even cuter than your pictures,” she told him.
Chris’s cheeks flushed slightly, “thank you,” he smiled, “it’s nice to meet you, Charlotte. Savannah talks about you all the time.”
“Good,” Charlotte answered with a laugh, “I’m looking forward to getting to know you better and seeing why my baby sister is so crazy about you. But right now, I’m starving. Zig, why don’t we go get some food while Chris and Savannah catch up?” My surprise must have shown because she laughed. “Big sisters are always right, remember? Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
“I’m not sure that’s possible,” I shot back but I was smiling. I tugged at Chris’s hand. “I think we should follow Charlie’s excellent advice.”
“I agree,” he said in a low voice, his eyes full of desire. “Let’s go so I can show you exactly how much I missed you.”
