I headed to my locker at lunchtime and was surprised to see Emma and Maria waiting for me.

“What’s up?”

They exchanged a look.

“Nothing,” Emma answered, but she was smiling.

“Just waiting for you,” Maria added.

“I’m having lunch with Michael,” I reminded them. I had mentioned it to Emma that morning, besides it was Valentine’s Day. As much as I liked my friends, I wanted to be with my boyfriend.

“We know,” Maria assured me with a grin.

OK, what was going on? Before I could ask again, Michael appeared, flowers and a stuffed animal in his arms.

“I told you’d he go cheesy,” I heard Maria whisper but I was too focused on Michael to care.

He was blushing. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Cassie.”

I threw my arms around his neck, “oh Michael!” I hugged him tightly. “You are the best.”

“Only because that’s what you deserve,” he told me.

Behind him I could see Maria roll her eyes. “You two are nauseating.” She turned to Emma. “I believe I won.”

“Won?” I asked, pulling back from Michael to gaze suspiciously at my two best friends.

They ignored me.

“No, because Cassie hasn’t given her gift yet,” Emma said sweetly, “you do have a gift for Michael, right?”

I narrowed my eyes at her, wondering what was going on, but she had reminded me of something important. “I do.” I opened my locker and took out the cookies I had baked the night before, Michael’s favorite, and I had also attached tickets to a motorcycle expo I knew he wanted to go too.

“This is great,” Michael told me with a  grin.

“See, not cheesy at all,” Maria said approvingly.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked her.

“Nothing,” Emma said quickly, pulling Maria down the hall, “have a fun lunch you two!”

“I told you, I’d win,” I heard Maria say triumphantly.

I looked at Michael. “What do you think that was about?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know, but I also don’t care. All I care about is spending Valentine’s Day with my beautiful girlfriend.”

I smiled, “that can be arranged.”

I grabbed my coat from my locker and then took Michael’s hand as we walked out to the snowy courtyard. “Can you believe we’ve been together almost a year?” I mused, smiling up at him.

“No,” Michael told him, “but sometimes I can’t believe I met you. You changed my entire world, Cassie.”

“For the better, I hope,” I said lightly as Michael cleared off the bench so we could sit down.

“Definitely,” he agreed, wrapping his arm around me and pulling me into his side. I rested my head on his shoulder, just soaking up the comfort of being next to him. Michael placed a hand on my face, gently tilting my head so I was gazing up at him. “Happy Valentine’s Day,” he said quietly before lowering his lips to mine in a sweet kiss.

When we pulled away, I rested my forehead against his. “Happy Valentine’s Day,” I said with a smile, wishing I could stay like this forever.

It was perfect.
