“Good morning, my beautiful wife…”
Istvan was crouched at the side of their cloud-like bed as he whispered, stroking her hair away from her forehead. Viktoria groaned as she blinked, her lips forming a weak sleepy smile,
“Morning…”
He leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on her lips,
“How are you feeling?”
Viktoria cupped her handsome husband’s face in her palm as she came to, nodding,
“Yeah, ok I think. What time is it??”
She scrabbled to sit up in the bed. Istvan smoothed her hair,
“Vik it’s 11.30, but it’s fine, I took the liberty of, well, rescheduling your diary today. Maxwell’s taking care of the Monarch’s Trust appointments. I thought it would be nice to just, have a little time together today.”
Viktoria’s eyes boggled,
“11.30?? What the…? How did I sleep this late?? Why did you let me?? You didn’t tell Max about…you know?”
She pointed down at her stomach. Her heart leapt into her throat, Viktoria was nowhere near ready to let everyone know about the baby. She still wasn’t used to yesterday’s revelation herself yet; she wasn’t even sure how she really felt about it yet. She’d laid awake half the night with tears soaking into her pillow, worried sick…
Istvan’s eyes widened as he held up his hands to placate her,
“Woah, you obviously needed the rest or you wouldn’t have slept so late. And Viktoria, my love, no, of course I didn’t tell Maxwell. We only just found out, and as much as part of me that wants to shout about this from the rooftops, there’s another part that wants to do this…”
He rested one hand on her stomach as he pulled her into a tender clinch. Viktoria felt herself whimper as she melted into him, her agitation dissipating by the second. As Istvan broke away, he leaned his forehead against hers,
“…And stay here in this perfect little bubble with you. Both of you. I want to keep this as our very own wonderful, special secret for just a little longer. We’re the only two people in the world who know, my beautiful girl… Isn’t that a marvellous thing?”
Viktoria’s lips curled into a small smile as she took in the completely blissful grin spread across Istvan’s face. She liked that idea. Not only because she definitely was not ready for everyone to know yet, but because of how intimate he made it sound, how special her husband made her feel when he said it…
Viktoria wrapped her arms around Istvan’s neck, pulling him closer to her; she felt like she was being clingy, but she just wanted to be near to him. She needed that. She wished she could simply curl up in his arms and never leave,
“Will you snuggle with me Ist…?”
Istvan pressed a kiss onto the end of her nose as he whispered,
“I’d like nothing more, but first, I’ve got something for you… Stay here.”
Istvan raised to his feet, disappearing from the bedroom. Viktoria chewed on her bottom lip as her eyes followed him, one hand grazed over her lower stomach as she repeated to herself the words Istvan had said, ‘Our very own special secret’.
Five minutes later Istvan reappeared carrying a breakfast tray filled with fresh fruit, croissants, coffee and apple juice, winking at her,
“Breakfast is served, my Queen…”
He sat the tray down beside Viktoria on the bedside table as he ducked back out of the bedroom, reappearing with a beautiful bouquet of pink, white and lilac flowers in a vase – so large she couldn’t see his head behind them – and two luxurious-looking gift bags.
Viktoria couldn’t help but chuckle as she looked at him,
“Someone’s been busy while I was unconscious? Ist, what is all this?!”
Istvan scooted down onto the bed beside her, kissing her cheek and grabbing a croissant,
“Well we do need to eat. And the flowers are for you of course, my beautiful girl. I just wanted to show you how much I love you. You have given me the most precious gift, my darling…”
He handed her one of the gift bags, as he continued,
“These gifts don’t even start to express how grateful-”
Viktoria felt her face colour; she cut him off with a gentle kiss,
“Please Istvan… You don’t have to thank me… You didn’t have to do all this…”
He rubbed his thumb across her flushed cheek,
“But I wanted to. Open this one first. Please Vik?”
Viktoria shook her head laughing a little nervously, she couldn’t believe how much he was spoiling her; she didn’t deserve any of this. Her fingers picked apart the white satin ribbon of the gift bag. Inside was a jewellery box. An expensive looking one at that: aqua blue coloured with a white bow… ‘Tiffany?’, Viktoria gave Istvan a sideways glance, she’d been Queen for over 4 years now, but she’d still never gotten used to the luxurious lifestyle being Istvan’s wife afforded her: she’d sworn to herself before they married that she’d never take any of it for granted, and she’d stuck to that statement… God knows she’d happily go back to living in a studio apartment earning waitressing wages if it was the only way they could be together. Anything to be to be with Istvan.
Flipping open the box she gasped, her hand flying up to her mouth, trembling. She could feel Istvan’s piercing blue eyes boring into her, watching her reaction as she ran her manicured fingertips over the beautiful necklace contained within. A teardrop-shaped glittering pink stone, surrounded by brilliant shining diamonds, set in what she assumed to be platinum. Istvan took the box from her,
“It’s a pink sapphire. Do you like it Vik? It’s so pretty… And your favourite colour… My love, I wanted you to have a small memento, so that when you wear it, you always remember when we found out about our baby and how much I love you.”
He removed it as Viktoria moved her hair to let him secure it around her neck. Viktoria touched the cold jewels against her skin and tried to smile at him, tears filling up in her eyes. Istvan drew back slightly, his face fallen,
“You don’t like it?”
Viktoria was by now sniffling and trying to blink back her tears,
“Of course I like it, silly! I’d have to be nuts not to like it. I just can’t believe… It’s too much. You didn’t have to… I’m just a bit emotional I think…”
Istvan handed his softly weeping wife a tissue from the box on the bedside table and placed a kiss in her hair, teasing,
“Remind me never to buy you jewellery again, my love…”
As soon as Vik had composed herself and dried her tears, Istvan silently handed her the second gift bag, watching his wife, a soft look filled with love adorned his face. Viktoria nudged his arm, smiling at him, trying to cover the tears that threatened to start again any second,
“Get me another tissue Ist…”
With one arm around her, he helped Viktoria untie the white ribbon of the gift bag. Vik reached inside, pulling out a small fluffy brown fluffy bear with the Steiff button through it’s ear. It was so sweet and soft. Viktoria’s nose crinkled as she looked at Istvan,
“Is this for me?”
He shook his head, speaking quietly,
“No. This is my son or daughter’s first gift from their Daddy…”
Viktoria’s mouth fell open as she looked at the man sat beside her; he truly was the most beautiful, kind-hearted, thoughtful soul she’d ever met. She felt completely overwhelmed again, but in a nice way this morning. Different. Not the same foreboding anxiety she’d felt last night. Her eyes started to well up again, her voice so small as she whispered,
“You bought the baby a present? But it’s so small. It’s probably not even as big as that button yet…”
She held the stuffed bear in both hands, rubbing her thumb gently over the button in it’s ear. Istvan peeled one of her hands away from the bear, placing a kiss on knuckles,
“Yes I know. But this little baby has stolen it’s Daddy’s heart already. I can’t even begin to explain… Oh Vik…”
He bent over and placed a loving kiss on his wife’s flat belly, grinning up at her, sighing,
“My precious little button…”
Viktoria berated herself for being so selfish last night and this morning, for being so focussed on how she felt and how scared she was. Looking at Istvan her heart melted: how did she deserve someone so special? His love for his unborn child was breath-taking. He seemed so natural. Hell, she still wasn’t sure that she was actually cut out for, or capable of any of this, but she owed it to him to try her very best. Viktoria thanked God that he was hers… That he was… ‘Theirs’?
