“Goodbye Sawyer, don’t forget about me…”
Kerry bit her lip as she tried to smile at him. Sawyer grinned at her from under the brim of his Stetson,
“Not possible.”
Kerry’s mind flooded as she let go of Sawyer’s hand, walking away. The ghost of his touch still on her fingers… She could feel his eyes on her as she stepped further away.
But her dreams, California, a new life, a new career… She took one last tentative step before she halted drawing in a sharp breath. What was she doing? It was as though she was rooted to the ground, some magnetic force pulling her back to the strapping cowboy who had captured her imagination, and if she was honest with herself, he’d captured her heart…
Did she love him? Hell, it was far too sudden for all of that, because Kerry had been burned before and it would take her a long long time before she ever let herself be ‘that’ vulnerable with a man again, but there was something about Sawyer that made her stomach flip, her cheeks flush and her heart thump inside her chest… She was falling for him, and it terrified her, but how could she walk away?
Everything she’d learned about him so far, he was nothing like the man who’d broken her heart… He was kind, he was honest and he was gentle… Did she even deserve a chance with someone like him? He seemed to like her and he was so sincere… Her mind flashed back to painting the barn last night together, his arms pulling her close to him as their warm lips found each other, the taste of cider on their tongues…
She felt her eyes fill with tears as she tried to decide… Should she turn around or take a step forward…? She was pulled from her thoughts as she felt large hands gently settle on her bare arms, a low voice breathed in her ear, only a single word that melted the fear and indecision inside of her …
