Very Adequate – Beckett x MC

Summary: Beckett and MC (Lana) share a moment while they wait for the potion to finish brewing.

Notes: I loved Beckett’s diamond scene in chapter 9 in The Roost, but I decided to modify it a little bit for some fluff. Also, I don’t know if anyone watches Schitt’s Creek (if you’re not, you should be), but this fic was very much inspired by Patrick (Noah Reid) singing an acoustic cover of “Simply to Best” to David. I’ve been listening to the song on repeat on Spotify and I think it’s safe to say I’m obsessed. I recommend listening to that song while you read this fic for the full effect 😁

“Alright, perfect,” Beckett said as he examined the potion. “Now it just needs to simmer for a couple of hours before it’s ready.”

He sat down on one of the couches in the Roost and Lana sat beside him curling her feet underneath her. Beckett glanced over at her and tentatively reached for her hand. She smiled and took it, lacing her fingers between his. They’d been together for about a month now, but Beckett still seemed so cautious around her, like he was afraid she’d run off if he showed too much of himself. Lana wasn’t sure how to make him understand that there wasn’t a chance of him scaring her off. It had only been a short amount of time, but she was in so deep that there wasn’t a chance of her finding the surface anytime soon.

“So what did you think of my Thief match today?” Lana asked. He glanced at her and she felt the familiar fluttering in her stomach  she felt whenever his gray eyes met hers. She kept expecting to get used to him, but so far that hadn’t happened.

“You played well,” Beckett said, glancing back towards the potion. “Your skills are very adequate.”

“Adequate?” Lana asked, a grin breaking across her face. “Please, I was amazing.”

“You’re always amazing.”

Lana watched the blush rise in his cheeks and she knew he’d spoken before considering his words. She loved moments like this, moments when she caught him off guard and he didn’t try to put up a false front. Lana gently squeezed his hand and he looked back at her. They held each other’s gaze for a while, neither saying a word.

Finally, Lana leaned over and kissed him. He cupped her cheek with his free hand, his fingers brushing her pale blonde hair back from her face. Beckett deepened the kiss, pulling her to him. She straddled his lap, her fingers in his soft hair. She rolled her hips against his and his fingers dug into her hips, a soft moan whispering against her lips.

“As much as it pains me to say this, I think we should slow down,” Beckett murmured when he finally drew the strength to pull away. “I don’t know how long the others will be gone and I can’t deal with Shreya giving me a hard time if she catches us in a…compromising position.”

Lana grinned and kissed the tip of his nose. “Fine, I guess that’s fair. But can we pick this up later?”

“Absolutely,” Beckett said, sounding a little relieved. Did he really think she’d say no? His cheeks reddened at his own boldness and Lana bit her lip, trying and failing to suppress a smile. She started to slide off of his lap to sit beside him again when Beckett stopped her.

“You don’t have to move yet,” he said. Lana could hear the nervousness creeping back into his voice. “I mean, if you don’t want to.”

“I am pretty comfortable,” Lana said. “I suppose–for you–I could stay.”

Beckett gently pulled her into a hug and Lana nestled her head on his shoulder, face buried in his neck. She breathed deeply, inhaling the clean scent of him. Lana could smell the soap he used, its slightly minty aroma still desperately trying to cling to his skin. She felt safe in his arms as he encircled her waist, one hand tracing a lazy pathway up and down her spine. As Lana sat there, wrapped in his embrace, all thoughts of shades and shadow monsters and blood magic felt very far away. She brushed a single, gentle, feather-light kiss against his neck and felt Beckett shiver slightly beneath her lips before hugging her tighter. So much about this magical world felt new and strange to Lana, but sitting there, in Beckett’s arms, she knew there was one thing she didn’t have to question.
